Investments in private funds or other non-traditional assets can be held within our self-directed solo 401(k) plan.

If the brokerage firm does not hold these investments, the plan owner can use a checkbook control feature to make investments directly from the solo 401(k) account 1. This allows the plan owner to have more control over their investments and make investments in private funds or other alternative assets 1. The checkbook can be used to purchase assets such as real estate, notes, private equity, metals, and tax liens 1.

The Solo 401k investment must be made under the name and EIN of the Solo 401k (we obtain an EIN for the Solo 401k as part of the onboarding process). The solo 401k owner will then hold for safekeeping the Solo 401k investment documents as the trustee of the Solo 401k.
