Mega backdoor Question
Posted by Craig S. on March 8, 2023 at 1:04 pmIf I have a solo 401k that I make pre-tax and after tax contributions in, how do I roll the after tax portion to a Roth account? Can this be done in the same 401k account by moving funds from the after tax account to the Roth account? Or do I have to move the funds from the after tax account to a new Plan like a Roth IRA?

March 9, 2023 at 1:09 pmVoluntary after-tax solo 401(k) contributions must be deposited in a separate subaccount for voluntary after-tax solo 401(k) funds. Such funds can then be transferred from the voluntary after-tax solo 401(k) subaccount to the Roth solo 401(k) subaccount (or to a Roth IRA). As a result, one may have three different subaccounts: a pretax, Roth, and voluntary after-tax solo 401(k) subaccounts.
