🍷 Can Your IRA Buy Wine, Art, or Other Collectibles?
Posted by Mark Nolan on September 5, 2026 at 6:49 amQ: Can my self-directed IRA invest in wine, art, or other collectibles?
A: No — collectibles such as wine, art, rugs, antiques, gems, stamps, and coins are disallowed investments for any IRA. As an example, the firm notes that a $100,000 collectible purchase would be treated as a taxable distribution in the year of purchase, reported on Form 1099-R, plus a 10% early-distribution penalty if the account owner is under age 59½.
